The latest addition to the wildly successful Fiat 500, the 500X is a highly versatile compact crossover SUV which is equally at home in town centres, motorways or rural roads. With a choice of four petrol and three diesel engines, two- or four-wheel drive, and manual or automatic transmissions (including a nine-speed automatic gearbox, the first of its kind from Fiat), the 500X has something for everyone.
Five different specifications are available: the entry level “Pop", the still more luxurious “Popstar" and “Lounge", and the more rugged “Cross" and “Cross Plus" variants, which have more of a focus on off-road driving.
The versatility of the 500X is such that it comes in two different variants for its launch with the City Look and Off-Road variants. Click to view these below.
The chic retro styling which has proved so popular with the other incarnations of the Fiat 500 translate well to the crossover model. The bug-eyed headlights and slim 'moustache' grille give the 500X the same instantly loveable front profile, whilst the extra height gives it a more imposing look. Cross and Cross Plus models feature roof rails and bold bumpers for a more rugged feel, as well as bumpers that enable bigger approach and departure angles.
Inside the cabin, drivers are favoured with a high driving position offering excellent visibility, whilst passengers can enjoy comfortable, supportive and fully-adjustable seats with a great deal of headroom and legroom. As well as 350 litres of loadspace (910 litres with the rear seats folded forward), the 500X provides an abundance of advanced technology as standard, including a 5" or 6.5" Uconnect infotainment touchscreen with a TomTom navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity.
The pleasurable experience of driving or being driven in the 500X is enhanced further by the pliant ride and the refinement of the engine range. The quiet and clean 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engine delivers 118bhp, 68.9mpg and 109g/km of CO2 emissions, as well as substantial torque at low revs. The 2.0-litre Multijet diesel delivers impressive power and returns 51.4mpg; meanwhile the 1.4 litre Turbo Multiair II petrol engine can propel the vehicle from 0-62mph in under 10 seconds.
In addition to its other qualities, the 500X boasts a comprehensive assortment of active and passive safety measures. Six airbags are standard to all models, along with an array of active safety measures including ABS brakes, Electronic Stability Control, Dynamic Steering Torque, Hill Start Assist and ASR traction control systems. Optional extras include such amenities as Lane Departure Warning and Blind Spot Assist, which aids concentration on the road, and a rear camera to ensure that there are no mishaps when reversing into a space.
Opening Edition “City Look" models receive a number of sophisticated cosmetic and practical enhancements, including DRL headlights and foglights, 18" alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, and cruise control; drivers are also favoured with electrically-adjustable door mirrors, an electric parking brake and a variety of infotainment functions accessed through a 3.5" TFT digital display. This variant is fitted with the 1.4 litre MultiAir II petrol engine, which is more suited to city driving.
“Off-Road Look" Opening Editions, meanwhile, present a more rugged profile. A reinforced front bumper and scuff plates lend the model a still more purposeful appearance, complementing the “Amore Red" three-coat paint. The cabin includes black leather upholstery with red inserts, as well as a variety of futures useful for rural areas and rough terrain. These include a third rear headrest, “Visibility Pack" (Electrochromatic rear view mirror, a rain and dusk sensor, and a satellite navigation system accessed via the 6.5" UConnect touchscreen).
