Practical and comfortable, the i800 from Hyundai meets the role of a family or chauffeur car perfectly. The refined cabin holds a variety of much needed kit, while the overall design is stylish and sophisticated – a rare combination for the class.
To the conventional people carrier Hyundai has applied an attractive design that lifts the appeal of the model above many of its rivals. Body coloured door handles and alloy wheels are joined by protective mouldings for the bumpers and side skirts, which help to protect the quality of the exterior. The rear boot door opens fully upwards for simple access to belongings, while a large side sliding door makes it easy for passengers to take their seat.
The cabin holds eight in total, and the second row slides to increase storage capacity or room for occupants. With all seats full there's still 851 litres for luggage, and like the rest of the cabin, the boot is robust. Durable cloth upholstery is found next to soft-touch materials, and the driver's seat is fully adjustable so multiple users can motor in comfort. It's also heated, adding a touch of luxury.
Convenience is another strength of the i800, and the interior is home to a number of fixtures that make motoring straightforward. The driver's window includes one touch control, joined by electric door mirrors which can be adjusted in an instant. A 12 volt power socket allows you to keep electrical items charged, including devices connected to the audio system via USB or AUX input. iPod functionality lets you listen to your own choice of music, which can be controlled using the steering wheel-mounted buttons.
When on the road, the 134bhp 2.5-litre CRDi engine will carry a full cabin confidently to any destination, and a higher-powered 168bhp unit with smooth five-speed automatic transmission can also be chosen for added muscle. Should you need to tow, the i800 is up to the task, with a 2,300kg braked weight capacity allowing you to pull plenty of extra luggage.
Driving is also safe in the people carrier, as a number of intelligent systems have been fitted to keep the vehicle poised on the road. Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is joined by Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), while reversing sensors make you aware of any obstacles behind. There are also ISOFIX anchor points to securely hold infant passengers, plus front airbags.
