KEEN bakers in Cardiff are this month (February, 2016) being invited to enter the Great Wessex Bake Off and have their creations judged by an award-winningchef in aid of a charity in the city.  Our Hadfield Road in Cardiff is hosting the event all day on Wednesday, February 24 in aid of its Charity of the Year, George Thomas Hospice Care and James Sommerin will be judging the competition.

Gareth Howells, our General Manager at the dealership, explained: “We held the event last year and due to its success we decided we had to host the event again. We are delighted that this year James has agreed to be involved with the bake off.

“He opened the successful Restaurant James Sommerin on the seafront in Penarth, nearly two years ago. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, winning three AA rosettes and judged the Best Restaurant in Wales by The Good Food Guide. James also represented Wales in the 2009 final of the BBC’s Great British Menu.

“James obtained his first Michelin Star in 2007 at the Crown at Whitebrook and he retained the coveted Michelin star until 2013 when the Crown closed its doors.

“Alec Travillian, Wessex Garages’ Innovation Specialist, and Milton Parathyras of Venture Photography in Cardiff have already signed up to compete for the second year for the title. This year, they are also being joined by keen baker, Ian Mcauliffe, our New Car Sales Executive.”

The public are also welcome to enter the competition for free, or if they would prefer, they are also welcome to simply pop in and sample the cakes with a cup of coffee and a chat. All proceeds raised on the day will go to George Thomas Hospice Care.

The event consists of three categories – pastries or biscuits, cakes or brownies and a wildcard – where anything goes. Whoever wins the most categories will be crowned the winner for 2016 and have the title of Wessex Garages’ Best Baker.

George Thomas Hospice Care was established in 1984 and has helped more than 24,000 patients and their families in Cardiff. It is committed to personal dignity, quality of life and the highest possible standards of care and service.

The services the charity provides are free of charge. It offers a number of services at its Hospice Centre based in Whitchurch Hospital Grounds, however much of its work takes place in its patients’ homes.

Nicky Piper MBE, Corporate Fundraising & Events Manager for George Thomas Hospice Care, said: “I can’t wait until the Great Wessex Bake Off to try all the delicious treats. I hope lots of people in Cardiff also take part to give Alec, Milton and Ian some worthy competition. We will be looking out for soggy bottoms!”

The Great Wessex Bake Off will take place at Wessex Garages on Hadfield Road all day on Wednesday, February 24 and James Sommerin will judge the cakes and other baked goods at 3.30pm.
