Sixteen-year-old, Jacob Summerill from Crosskeys and Seventeen-year-old, Emily Hayward from Caldicot
EMILY Hayward from Caldicot and Jacob Summerill from Crosskeys are celebrating this month (August, 2015) after each securing an apprenticeship at our Newport dealership.
Seventeen-year-old Emily and 16-year-old Jacob will both be working towards a Light Vehicle and Maintenance Repairs Apprenticeship.
Dean Hill, our Service Manager at Newport Retail Park, explained: “We would like to welcome Emily and Jacob to our workshop team.
“They are a very important part of our development of the Kia and Hyundai brands at our Newport site and will help us build a team that will be able to take care of all our Hyundai and Kia customers after sales needs as the Hyundai and Kia brands grow and expand in the future.
“As a company we believe in giving opportunities to young and enthusiastic people with the aim of developing them towards a successful career in the motor industry. Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for us to do this and we’re looking to take on more apprentices during the coming months within the Wessex group.”
Jacob will be participating in a Hyundai Academy Apprenticeship and Emily is on the Kia Academy Apprenticeship scheme.
Over a three year period they will gain a national recognised qualification – IMI Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Competence, Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles, gain a VRQ Level 3 award in refrigerant handling (F-Gas) and become ATA accredited in Light Vehicle service.
Emily said: “I chose to be in the trade of mechanics because I enjoy practical work and taking things apart seeing how it all works and putting it back together.
“I have some previous experience as I was on mechanics course. I took a huge liking towards this trade and I chose Wessex Garages to do my apprentice as they offer great opportunities for my future career.”
On successful completion of the apprenticeships as Light Vehicle Technicians Emily and Jacob will be responsible for carrying out services and repairs on light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
Jacob explained: “I have been brought up around cars and I have wanted to be a mechanic all my life. I wanted to follow in my Dad’s footsteps. I choose Wessex Garages because they offer a large variety of different car brands so I will be able to work on a range of vehicles.”
