A hugely capable all-rounder, the Nissan Pulsar is a family hatchback with an attractive contemporary design, comfortable and spacious interior, a refined choice of engines, and irreproachable ride quality.
Four levels of trim are available – the Visia, the Acenta, the N-Tec and the Tekna. Characterful LED headlamps, chrome detailing and diamond-cut alloy wheels are standard to all of them, emphasising the impression made by the wide, assertive grille and poised stance. At the rear, a prominent spoiler and diffuser adds an extra touch of dynamism to the Pulsar's subtle looks.
The immersive cabin provides headroom, legroom and loadspace far in excess of anything else in the Pulsar's class. This degree of space, along with the comfortable and supportive seating and dual-zone climate control, ensure that even lengthy journeys are relaxing and refreshing for front and rear passengers. The 385 litres of loadspace can extend to an impressive 1,395 litres when the rear seats are folded forward.
From the driver's seat, the Pulsar offers all-round visibility, giving a superb view of the road ahead. Levels of driver-convenience equipment are also very generous; all models, even the entry-level Visia, are favoured with the full-colour 5" TFT information screen with the manufacturer's Advanced Drive-Assist Display. This device communicates essential navigation information, along with visual and audible warning signals if the vehicle develops a major fault. USB and Bluetooth® connectivity, along with cruise control, are standard to all models. The N-Tec and Tekna specifications feature the NissanConnect system, which provides you with a more sophisticated array of entertainment and communications features as well as access to the internet.
The quiet, refined 1.2 litre petrol engine and 1.5 litre diesel unit available with the Pulsar suit its character perfectly. Offering 115PS, the highly responsive petrol motor can push it from stationary to 62mph in an impressive 10.5 seconds, even whilst it achieves respectable combined fuel consumption and carbon output figures of 56.5mpg and 117g/km respectively. The 110PS diesel manages even better economy, with combined consumption of 78.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 94g/km – well below the minimum threshold for Vehicle Excise Duty.
Safety, as ever, is a priority for this Nissan family car, which has received a five-star safety rating from NCAP. Six airbags are standard, whilst the active safety features included on each model include ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Brake Assist. Tekna editions also feature Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection systems, protecting you against fatigue or a loss of concentration.
