We're hosting a raffle for the Welsh girls' basketball team to raise money

TWO GIRLS' basketball teams from Wales have qualified for a tournament in Andorra this summer and we will be giving them a helping hand with their fundraising efforts to get there (April, 2015).

Our dealership on Hadfield Road in Cardiff is hosting a raffle for the players to help them raise the £9,000 they need to compete in the European Championships from July 20 until 25.

Gareth Howells, our General Manager, said: “It is fantastic news that the Welsh Under 16 and Under 18 basketball squads have qualified to attend the European Championships.

“However to get the teams there to compete they need £9,000 to cover travel and kit costs. We were more than happy to help with their cause as it would be amazing to get them to the championships to represent Wales.

“We have produced raffle tickets which the girls, family members and coaching staff can sell at £2 each or £10 for a book of five to friends, neighbours and school mates.

“All proceeds from the tickets will go straight the team and we will be providing the prize, which is a family pass for four to Oakwood Theme Park and the use of one of our cars with a full tank of fuel to get them there. They will also be able to have the car for the whole weekend."

The raffle will be drawn on Friday, May, 29, 2015.

Sarah-Jayne Evans, Welsh Team Manager for the basketball teams, explained: “Girls basketball is an emerging sport in Wales. During the past three years, girls from across Wales have been sought out and selected to form Welsh basketball development squads. From these development squads, two Welsh girls' squads have been chosen.

“We were delighted when the Under 16 and Under 18 squads qualified to attend the European Championships in Andorra. Both teams are strong and the girls are committed and determined to succeed in Europe. They train every day and have significant potential.

“Unfortunately, as with many sports, girls' basketball does not currently receive any financial support and the team are having to raise funds to attend the event. We would like to say a huge 'thank you' to Wessex Garages for helping the girls with their fundraising efforts. Its support is much appreciated."
