A CARDIFF photographer has been named as our Best Baker at a bake off event that took place in aid of charity at our Hadfield Road dealership in the city yesterday (February 24, 2016).
Award-winning chef James Sommerin judged the competition in aid of George Thomas Hospice Care and crowned Milton Parathyras of Venture Photography the winner.
“He created a number of delicious items including Black Forest Gateaux Cones, Carrot Cakes and Cinnamon Roll Cookies, and it was the cookies that won it for him. James commented that the Cinnamon Roll Cookies were crisp, clean, with lots flavour and baked just right.
“Milton beat off stiff competition from Alec Travillian, Wessex Garages’ Innovation Specialist, who baked Dark Chocolate Espresso Meringue Tarts, Lemon Cream Cheese Biscuits and Milk Chocolate Pecan Crusted Biscuits with Caramel and Chocolate Top and Ian McAuliffe, our New Car Sales Executive, who created Banana Bread Brownies.
“We were also delighted that this year James agreed to judge the bake off. He opened the successful Restaurant James Sommerin on the seafront in Penarth, nearly two years ago. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, winning three AA rosettes and judged the Best Restaurant in Wales by The Good Food Guide.
“The public were welcome to pop in during the day and sample the cakes with a cup of coffee and a chat. We are pleased to announce that we managed to raise £287 in aid of our Charity of the Year, George Thomas Hospice Care from donations during the event.”
The Great Wessex Bake Off consisted of three categories – pastries or biscuits, cakes or brownies and a wildcard. Milton won the most categories and was crowned the winner for 2016 and will hold the title of Wessex Garages’ Best Baker until next year.
Milton explained: “I am thrilled and surprised to win as the competition was so tough. I am very pleased it was such a success as the money raised is going to a fantastic cause. Thanks to Wessex Garages for arranging the event.”
George Thomas Hospice Care was established in 1984 and has helped more than 24,000 patients and their families in Cardiff. It is committed to personal dignity, quality of life and the highest possible standards of care and service.
The services the charity provides are free of charge. It offers a number of services at its Hospice Centre based in Whitchurch Hospital Grounds, however much of its work takes place in its patients’ homes.
Nicky Piper MBE, Corporate Fundraising & Events Manager for George Thomas Hospice Care, said: “We would like to thank Wessex Garages for once again hosting the Bake Off in aid of George Thomas Hospice Care. Also thanks to James for coming along and judging for us. It was great to get a professional opinion.
“It was a fantastic day and the bakers did an amazing job creating a range of tasty goodies for us to try. Well done to Milton for taking the crown – highly deserved.”
