What Does a Vehicle Technician Do?
Vehicle Technicians are skilled in everything from vehicle mechanics to electronics, ensuring cars run smoothly and safely. Here’s a snapshot of the kind of work you’ll be doing:
- Servicing vehicles: Performing checks and maintenance following manufacturer guidelines.
- Repairing and replacing parts: Diagnosing issues and fixing what’s not working.
- Collaborating with Service Advisors: Communicating repair needs and updates.
- Time estimating: Helping customers understand how long repairs will take.
- Record keeping: Maintaining detailed service and repair logs.
Training That Sets You Up for Success
As an apprentice, you’ll learn from experienced Technicians who are eager to share their knowledge. This isn’t just a classroom experience – you’ll be hands-on right from the start!
- Duration: at least 36 months of expert training, resulting in a Level 3 qualification in Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle).
Learning style:
- Day release: Spend one day a week at a training provider.
- On-site visits: Learn at work with online tuition and assessor visits, plus occasional sessions at the training provider’s location.
What We’re Looking For
We’re not just looking for skills – we’re looking for potential! Here’s what helps you stand out:
- Qualifications: GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths at grade 4/C or above are a bonus.
- Skills: Great communication, attention to detail, team spirit, and initiative are key.
- Extra points: A driving licence is advantageous but not essential.
