Nissan LEAF batteries breathe new life into EV charging system in Spain

March 12th, 2026

Nissan is supporting a truly circular life for its electric vehicle batteries by supporting the launch of an ultra-fast EV charging solution at the Port of Vigo, Spain.

Developed by Spanish energy storage and EV charging specialist Little Electric Energy, Green Charge Flex is a modular plug-and-play solution that repurposes 12 Nissan LEAF 30kWh battery packs into a 300kWh Energy Storage System (ESS).

The LEAF batteries will support four chargers at the Port of Vigo to deliver up to 240kW ultra-fast DC charging, alongside 22kW AC charging, to increase grid capacity.

Soufiane El Khomri, Nissan Energy Director for the Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania (AMIEO) region, said: “Together with Little Electric Energy, we are connecting innovation and circularity to give Nissan LEAF batteries a second life beyond the road.

“By integrating repurposed battery technology into modular energy storage systems, we are unlocking ultra-fast charging in ports, industrial sites and other locations where grid capacity is constrained, easing pressure on local grids and extending the value of our batteries far beyond their first use.

“This is how we are supporting the continued growth of electric mobility while building a more resilient, low-carbon energy future.”

The system is co-funded by the European Union and Spain’s national energy agency, the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) and will support CCS-1, CCS-2 and CHAdeMO standards.

Commercially attractive

The pilot installation will operate for at least one year in collaboration with a Charging Point Operator (CPO), and the Port of Vigo authorities.

Ruben Blanco, CEO Little Electric Energy, said: “Nissan has been a pioneer in electric mobility with the LEAF, and together we are now extending that leadership into circular energy solutions. With Green Charge Flex, we are showing how repurposed LEAF batteries can deliver fast, sustainable and commercially attractive charging wherever it’s needed.”

This partnership is a demonstration of Nissan’s commitment to refabricate, reuse, repurpose, recycle EV batteries, showing the infinite potential of an EV beyond its time on the road.
